Alison's Eulogy

Created by Fiona one year ago

Alison was born the only daughter of Edith on 28 April 1949, Manchester Royal Infirmary, Lancashire although raised in the Cheshire part of Stockport so considered herself a Cheshire lass!
Edith was the youngest of a large family so Alison grew up with over a dozen cousins living very close by.
Peter, always considered Alison as "The Sister I'd never had" and recalls himself as a nine year old, pushing new baby Alison along Spring Gardens in a pram under the watchful eye of mother, Aunt Edith.
Later Alison would use her dolls’ pram to take her pet dog, Micky, out.  This was the start of love of animals that gave rise to a series of pets including dogs, cats, and rabbits.  A love shared with Fiona and Alicia, which progressed through their childhood from hamsters, guinea pigs to the animals they now both have.
As her Mum had been amongst the first Brownies, Alison duly enrolled and enjoyed it so much she moved up to Guides. After marriage Alison became a Leader and would take her pack camping.  Both daughters later followed in Mum footsteps as Rainbows, Brownies and Guides.  Alison always said Guiding was good training for Management in later life!
Alison and Ian got to know each other through friends and the local social scene which included youth club and Town Hall Dances which featured upcoming local groups (The Hollies and Bus Stop Baby were a favourite).  There was a lively Jazz scene with Kenny Ball, Chis Barber Aker Bilk and many others.
One day Ian bumped into Alison walking Jan, a loving Boxer dog belonging to Peter’s parents.  The conversation resulted in Ian asking for a date which was accepted.  It was arranged that Ian should call for Alison at home then go to the Cinema, no doubt so this young man could be vetted by her Mum first!
The cinema was followed by coffee at La Caprice and acceptance of Ian’s suggestion to meet again.  It continued from there, Engagement, Marriage, two lovely daughters and a lifetime of happiness, travels and sharing the many things they both enjoyed with pets they all loved.
First Job        Cadburys Stockport Depot          joined from school as junior secretary, stayed until married, still has friends from those days and a treasured bible they presented to all employees on marriage.
Married
1968 was a busy year for the Hampson clan with cousins Carole and Pam, by then living in Newbury, marrying in July and early September.  Alison and Ian then married late in September at St Mary’s Parish Church, Stockport, which had been the hub for Alison’s worship, schooling and guiding.  Aunts particularly had comment to make about the need for three outfits that summer!
Alison and Ian honeymooned in St Ives; Cornwall had already been a holiday choice and became a favourite for many years supplemented by visits to the Isle of Wight.
Friendships developed among the ‘1968’ group and further strengthened when Alison and Ian moved down to Emsworth in the early ‘80’s.

1978 Moved to Barton under Needwood
I978 saw, a new house and in the May the birth of their first child, Fiona.  After maternity leave Alison returned to Nat West bank and worked in Lichfield, Tamworth, Walsall branches & the Area Office
1982 Moved to Emsworth
Another new job for Ian and the family had to move again, Emsworth was chosen, and after some unsuccessful attempts they were able to buy Aubrey Lodge, rather larger, older and in poorer condition than they wanted. However after re plumbing, re-wiring and much more while both working full time the house became a happy family home shared with many here today.
The move South began a series of new roles in NatWest for Alison, Emsworth, Havant and then Portsmouth Commercial Road branches, all as Mangers’ Secretary.
1986 saw Alison expecting, with Alicia born the following year and christened here at St Thomas a Becket. This was followed by a large gathering at Aubrey Lodge that gave so much pleasure to family and friends.

While at Nat West, Portsmouth Alison was asked if she would volunteer at St. Marys’ Hospital as Treasurer to the League of Friends; always ready to support a worthy cause this started some 28 years of service to the NHS.       Emma will say more of this later.

Travel
As a young married couple holidays involved visits to Yugoslavia, Belgium and France.  Once the girls arrived, visits to France continued, then further afield, including Spain, Norway, and beyond. While never a fan of flying Alison joined Ian on flights across the Southern States of America, when a young Alicia expressed her love of flights and airline food.  Other holidays led to Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa and eventually crossing Australia from Sydney, where they visited cousins, including Pam, one of the 1968 brides, then on to Canberra and Melbourne before meeting Alicia in Perth.

Alison and Ian’s 40th Wedding Anniversary was celebrated by Cruising from Southampton to Morocco.  The stop in Cadiz was a highlight for Alison with memories of school history about Spanish Armadas with no expectation of ever visiting.

Besides pets, travel and history, Alison’s loves in life have included her family, gardening, cooking, entertaining and helping and befriending others.  Christmas and New Year especially would see many guests around the tables with a great atmosphere.  Alison enjoyed the cooking and trying new recipe, invites were always welcomed by family and friends.

From the many tributes received, Alison is remembered as ‘a kind lady’, caring, warm, vibrant, amazing, quietly carrying out many good deeds and always endeavouring to make a real difference for others.

Home always had an open door, a warm welcome and a helping hand whenever needed, this will remain so.
